We know that she was a red-head, which is a little unusual for our family. We're not sure what her middle initials stand for, the R is probably for Rachel, her mother's name. Of course, that's just a guess and has not been documented.
Nancy, like her sister-in-law, Matilda also most likely faced hard times during the Civil War, as did all of the women of the south whose husbands volunteered (or were drafted) for the war effort. The mountains of Western North Carolina suffered greatly in spite of the fact that there was virtually no large scale fighting there. Food was scarce and the division in the mountains was more so than in other areas of the south. In addition to the skirmishes between Union and Confederate supporters, there were the deserters which sought refuge in the mountains.
In Nancy's case, her husband, and brothers had been either drafted or volunteered for service in the army.
