Matilda, no doubt, had a difficult time of it during the Civil War, as did all of the women of the south whose husbands volunteered (or were drafted) for the war effort. The mountains of Western North Carolina suffered greatly in spite of the fact that there was virtually no large scale fighting there. Food was scarce and the division in the mountains was more so than in other areas of the south. In addition to the skirmishes between Union and Confederate supporters, there were the deserters which sought refuge in the mountains.
In her case, her husband and brothers-in-law had been either drafted or volunteered, her brother also had joined the army.
Her name is listed along with her husbands in ceding land for Pleasant Grove Union Church.
