I feel obligated (although I’m not sure why) to explain that I’ve created a new category entitled “news”. Now, in dealing with genealogy the term news might be ambiguous (it might refer to discovering something that happened 200 years ago.) I expect I may use some latitude in that interpretation of news for the articles in this topic.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this, but I just read over at Randomgenealogy.com that two caskets from Kinston, NC have been exhumed and sent to the Smithsonian for study. Well, I’ve spent a good deal of time going through North Carolina counties up through the letter ‘C’. So, everything through Currituck should be seeing a good amount of detail. Make sure to scroll down on those pages. There should be lots of good reference information and links there. I don’t know if I can keep up the pace on the second draft of these counties. I suspect I may slow down a bit on revising those pages.

Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas began with the arrival in America of Christopher Columbus in 1492. He had been searching for a new route to the Asian Indies and was convinced he had found it. Columbus was made governor of the new territories and made several more journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. He profited from the labour of native slaves, whom he forced to mine gold; he also attempted to sell some slaves to Spain. While generally regarded as an excellent navigator, he was a poor administrator and was stripped of the governorship in 1500.
